The Best Diaper Bags

Finding the best diaper bag might be one of the hardest decisions parents nowadays have to make. When searching for my own diaper bag, I wanted one that had enough room for all the goods (and there area lot of must-have baby products), but also one that didn't need to be lugged around like a brick. I searched high and low for a bag that was cute but also functional — and one Dad wouldn't be ashamed to carry around.

With all of this in mind, I talked to other moms to get their advice on the best diaper bags on the market — and the opinions were plentiful. From the best bag to travel with to a bag that can handle twins and other multiples to a fanny pack that can hold just the necessities, these parents delivered when it came to information and real-time reviews.

Whether you're shopping for your own baby registry, looking to buy a gift for a shower, or just want to surprise your favorite new mom with a sweet present, we're sure you'll find the perfect carryall to accommodate your little bundle of joy and all the things they need when they are out and about on our list of tried and true diaper bag picks.

Skip Hop Suite 6-in-1 Diaper Backpack Set

    Suite 6-in-1 Diaper Backpack Set
    $100 at Amazon$100 at Macy's
    Pros
    • Tons of added accessories
    • Plenty of compartments
    • Easy to clean
    Cons
    • More color options would be ideal

For a diaper bag that gets the job done (and looks good doing it), has tons of useful add-ons, and comes in at under $100, it's hard to beat this Skip Hop option. There are more than enough compartments, with nine pockets total, and a wipe-clean exterior that Moms will love. The compartments vary with zipper enclosure and magnetic, so little ones can access a few pockets if they need to.

One area this backpack really shines, though, are the add-ons. It comes with a paci holder, changing pad, stroller straps, insulated bottle bag, and packing cube. Each accessory matches the chic look of the diaper bag, so you'll be strolling in style.

"Love this diaper bag for my twins!! It’s a perfect size and not too big and bulky," one reviewer said. "I can fit enough stuff in here for two babies and then some!! I ordered the black and it’s so pretty."

We do wish that this backpack came in a few more color options. Being limited to just grey and black might not be fun for moms who'd prefer blue or pink.

    Pros
    • Bag comes with a matching washable changing pad
    • Freestanding option allows you to find things faster
    • Gender-neutral design and colorways
    Cons
    • Doesn't come with any accessories

Our favorite thing about this bold colored diaper bag is the way that the clamshell opening allows it to stand up on its own, making it easier to search for whatever we're looking for in a hurry. And find it we will, thanks to the two open side pockets that are perfect for stashing baby wipes and extra diapers, a front pouch that is the perfect size for tucking an extra swaddle blanket, and a rear zipper pouch where you can store those things you don't want to risk losing.

"The amount of stuff it holds is crazy, and the overall size when zipped almost feels like you shouldn't be able to hold as much as you do," one Amazon reviewer mentioned. "I love the zipper in the back that you can open the bottom of the backpack if you have stuff stacked. The side pocket for the wipes was a key feature I was looking for and the bottle holders are bigger than they appear in photos online."

The storage solutions continue on the exterior, with two open side pockets. You'll find a wide zipper pocket that's perfect for storing baby bottles on the front of the bag, and in the rear you'll find another smaller pouch where you can put your valuables or other items you want to keep close.

The waterproof design comes in multiple colorways including this bold red wine shade that we absolutely love.

    Pros
    • Comes with cute accessories
    • Plenty of zippered storage and interior pockets
    • Comfortable and lightweight to carry
    Cons
    • Not washable, just wipe-clean
    • Dad might not be eager to carry it

For a diaper bag so cute you'll want to wear it for work, travel, and everything in between, go with this Petunia Pickle Bottom backpack. It has a cable stitch and vegan leather design that gives the exterior more texture and dimension than other options — two words you never thought you'd use to describe a diaper bag!

But personality isn't all this bag has — it checks all the practicality boxes, too. I use this backpack with my 6 month-old daughter and have found it to have just the right amount of space for all her necessities and then some. I can fit a pack of wipes, a few diapers, a change of clothes, her bottle warmer, diaper cream, and a small tub of formula in the main compartment, and it all stays organized thanks to the five pockets. In the magnetic front pocket I store toys, and the zippered front pocket includes a to-go toiletry kit. The two pockets on the side are perfect for bottles, and the front D-ring attaches our paci holder.

Additionally, this backpack has a wipeable changing pad and two D-rings on the back to attach to a stroller, as well as a trolley strap for airline travel.

    Pros
    • Card wallet included
    • Chic design comes in six colors
    • Keeps you totally hands-free
    • Tons of compartments for such a small bag
    Cons
    • Not big enough to carry more than a diaper and a few other things
    • Dad probably won't want to carry this one

Any time I just need to grab my daughter and run into a store or have a casual dinner at a restaurant, I grab this fanny pack. I love it so much that I've started using it just for myself (but shh...don't let my girl know).

This fanny pack was designed by Moms, so you can be sure it has enough room for baby essentials, as opposed to other trendy fanny packs. I can fit a travel pack of wipes, a couple of diapers, a small tube of diaper cream, my phone, and the included card holder in the main compartment. I love that there's three extra pockets in the main portion so I can keep my things separate from hers. I use the front and back compartments for car keys and a small toy.

Carrying around a whole diaper bag just for a quick run to Target isn't ideal. I love that this fanny pack frees up both of my hands to hold my daughter, and it's just a bonus that it's cute enough for me to wear around without her, too. Isn't that the ultimate seal of Mom-pproval?

Beis Travel The Backpack Diaper Bag

    The Backpack Diaper Bag
    Pros
    • Chic and stylish look
    • Tons of add-on features
    • Major functionality in interior compartments
    Cons
    • Lack of security on exterior pockets
    • Wish there were more color options

Meet: the diaper bag that can do it all. The Béis diaper bag gets tons of hype, and it's totally worth it. It comes with all the necessities — plenty of exterior pockets, roomy interior storage, a changing pad — but also includes add-ons that Moms will love, like a teething ring, key leash, and paci pouch.

And while this backpack was meant as a diaper bag (and has all the extras that Moms love), you'll find more than a few people who don't even have kids who use this bag. "I purchased this bag primarily for travel, not intending to use it as a diaper bag, and I'm extremely satisfied with it," one review said. "I was pleasantly surprised by the additional pouches and accessories it came with, including a teething ring, which was a delightful touch."

We also love the versatility. You can wear it as a backpack, attach it to the stroller, or use the trolley strap during travel.

While the interior compartment has plenty of multi-functional pockets, we do wish more of the exterior pockets had more secure storage. It might be easy for little hands to reach in and access toys or pacis, but that means it's also easy for those things to fall out. And any Mom who's lost a lovey knows that there's no coming back from that. We also wish this backpack came with a few more color options than black, grey, and navy.

Freshly Picked Classic II Diaper Bag Backpack

    Classic II Diaper Bag Backpack
    Pros
    • Tons of compartments
    • Easy to clean
    • Zippered and magnetic enclosure on main compartment
    Cons
    • No trolley strap, so not ideal for travel

A popular and on-trend option, this Freshly Picked backpack has a low profile but has more than enough room thanks to the expandable sides. It also comes with more than enough compartments, with seven interior pockets in the main compartment and five exterior pockets. With both a zippered and magnetic enclosure, everything in the main compartment is sure to stay safe and secure.

"I like how the material is very versatile and doesn't scream 'diaper bag,'" new mom Katie Chorney said. "Also, it can hold everything I need it to without appearing bulky or overloaded."

Another benefit to the vegan leather besides the versatility? Being easy-to-clean. Moms love being able to quickly wipe the interior and exterior after a spill (which happens often).

The padded straps are comfortable to carry, and the bag comes in tons of different color options. It has two D-rings to attach to a stroller, but it doesn't have a trolley strap, so it might not be the best for travel.

    • Beautiful fabric and colorway options
    • Easy cleaning and stain resistant materials
    • Matching accessories and add-ons available for purchase
    Cons
    • The zipper can stick the first few times you use it

A diaper bag that you can throw into the washing machine? Yes, please! This cute design from JuJuBe has it all—stunning colorways, rose gold metallic accents, plenty of pockets to help you keep track of everything, and additional add-on organizers that can purchased to go with your bag and help keep you organized.

    • Beautiful patterns that are unlike the traditional sold diaper bag choices
    • Insulated pockets for keeping breastmilk and other perishables chilled

The Poppy Brand Crossbody Diaper Bag

    Crossbody Diaper Bag
    Pros
    • Exterior wipes clean
    • Multiple zippers and pockets to keep organized
    Cons
    • Despite it's cute style it is a bit bulky

It's a purse, it's a crossbody bag, no, it's a diaper bag! This chameleon of a bag is many things at once, including a stylish way to keep yourself and your baby organized while you're away from home.

This chic bag unzips into two distinct sections: one for mom, and one for the baby. Each section comes with it's own little side pockets that are perfect for keeping the essentials in order.

The Poppy bag comes with two different crossbody straps, a thing plain black one to dress the diaper bag up and then a thicker patterned version to give the bag a more funky look. The firm exterior adds to the fashionable look of the bag, which can easily transition from a night out on the town to a stroll through the park.

We love this bag because it's perfect for moms who don't have (or want) to bring a whole lot of stuff along with them when they hit the road!

How Do You Choose the Best Diaper Bag?

    squiggly line

Obviously, choosing the best diaper bag will largely come down to how you use it. Personally, I wanted a bag that wasn't childish but kept me totally hands-free, which is why I love the Petunia Pickle Bottom Sync backpack. Here are some other factors you might want to consider:

    • Easy to clean As I'm sure you probably know: kids are messy. A diaper bag that can stand up to spilled purée packets, a set of messed-up clothes, or a formula spill is absolutely essential. Look for a bag that's able to be thrown in the washing machine or at least made of slick material that wipes clean easily.
    • Durability Many moms will tell you that they ended up carrying their diaper bags way longer than they had planned because there's no better way to lug everything for everyone everywhere. There's a good chance you'll still be using your diaper bag into the toddler years, so knowing you won't have to swap out for a new one is helpful.
    • Efficient storage Having plenty of storage just doesn't cut it when it comes to diaper bags — the storage has to be abundant and efficient. When you've got a screaming baby with a blowout, knowing you have tons of diapers somewhere in your diaper bag doesn't help nearly as much as being able to pinpoint the exact pocket you know you keep the diapers in. Moms need pockets, people! Compartments are your new best friend.
    • Easy to handle While many moms are pros at doing things one-handed, holding the diaper bag shouldn't be the other thing you're trying to do in addition to holding your baby. A bag that leaves you totally hands-free is worth its weight in gold.

Can Any Bag Be a Diaper Bag?

    squiggly line

Technically? Yes. Would we necessarily recommend it? Not for most bags. Like we mentioned before, you're expecting a lot out of your diaper bag, and most bags just can't provide it. A normal backpack might have tons of compartments and keep you hands-free, but it's likely not easy to clean. And a purse may be easy to wipe, but it's probably not the most durable. There might be a handful of non-diaper bag bags on the market that check all the boxes, but be sure to review them with a close eye before hitting "buy now."

How Much Should I Spend on a Diaper Bag?

    squiggly line

This is totally up to your budget, but we would recommend considering cost vs. use for this purchase. You're going to use your diaper bag pretty often over the next few months/years, so it's worth investing in one that you'll actually love. However, we did find more than one under $50 option that we think make amazing diaper bags!
