The 15 Best Natural Deodorants for Men That Actually Work

Absorbent formulas that keep your pits fresh

Lots of guys are making the switch to natural deodorant these days. Though "natural" isn't really an official term, it usually means the formula doesn't contain aluminum. Aluminum is the antiperspirant component of deodorant, and while the research isn't conclusive, some people are concerned about its potential link to cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

In any case, plenty of excellent aluminum-free, plant-sourced options are available. They're all different—many aim to absorb moisture, kill odor-causing bacteria, and mask body odor with naturally derived scents. But as board-certified dermatologist Carly J. Roman, MD, notes, "It may take a few weeks to adjust to the switch of natural deodorants."

With Dr. Roman's insight in mind, we researched dozens of the best natural deodorants for men on the market. Each product was evaluated for its ingredients list, effectiveness, suitability for different skin types, and scent. Here are the 15 we stand by.

What We Like
  • Great selection of scents

  • A little goes a long way

  • Helps you stay fresh-smelling all day

What We Don't Like
  • Can be a little difficult to apply

Schmidt's takes our top spot for its sheer variety of all-natural options, but it's the brand's Signature Deodorant that keeps us coming back for more. Made with arrowroot powder and baking soda, it naturally absorbs moisture and neutralizes funk—but it doesn't stop there. The formula also soothes and nourishes your skin with a blend of coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, and vitamin E.

Unlike many aluminum-free deodorants, this one actually addresses both the wetness and odor from sweat. That said, it can be a little trickier to apply than its antiperspirant counterparts. Starting with clean, totally dry underarms, you're supposed to hold it against your skin for a moment to soften it with your body heat. Then swipe it across the area a couple of times.

Who It's For

Boasting a strong formula at a reasonable price, Schmidt's Signature will convert natural deodorant skeptics and entice plant-based skincare enthusiasts to buy it again and again.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Arrowroot powder, baking soda, coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba oil | Size: 3.3 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Feels cooling and soothing on skin

  • Doesn't leave a residue

  • Certified B Corporation

What We Don't Like
  • Doesn't last as long as it claims

  • Scented variety might be overpowering for some

Tom's of Maine is a great budget-friendly option. A favorite in the natural toiletries market, the tried-and-true brand's take on aluminum-free deodorant calls on hops extract to neutralize odorous bacteria while soothing inflammation and calming skin (the latter thanks to aloe vera).

We love that it comes in odorless and natural scents like lavender, which most users love (although some say it's quite strong). Though this product says it provides 24 hours of odor protection, you might need to reapply it once or twice throughout the day.

Who It's For

If you're looking for a wallet-friendly formula that gently tackles underarm odors and lasts a long time, you can't go wrong with Tom's.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Aloe vera, hops extract | Size: 2.3 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Effectively absorbs moisture

  • Doesn't leave white cast

  • Neutral scent

What We Don't Like
  • Can be a little drying

It should come as no surprise that Arm & Hammer's hero ingredient for its deodorant is baking soda. The powdery substance works to absorb moisture and neutralize stinky smells. However, heed Dr. Roman's advice before proceeding: "Baking soda is an alkaline chemical compound, which can increase the pH of the skin, leading to dryness or irritation." If you find this product too drying, consider one containing coconut oil.

Who It's For

If your skin can tolerate the ultra-absorbent, pH-raising abilities of baking soda, you'll appreciate this effective natural formula.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Baking soda, coriander fruit oil | Size: 2.5 ounces | Cruelty-Free: No

What We Like
  • Doesn't leave a residue

  • Light yet pleasant scent

  • Neutralizes odors with essential oils

What We Don't Like
  • Could be longer-lasting

  • May be less effective for heavy sweaters

Not to imply that other deodorants on this roster will leave stains on your clothing—but that can be the reputation of natural deodorants and traditional antiperspirants. If you'd like to avoid streaks and white marks, try Malin + Goetz. Formulated with eucalyptus leaf oil and citronellyl, this transparent deodorant cancels out body odor without being aggressive on skin or clothing.

Users have noted it's not the most effective at mitigating stress sweat. Limited scents are available, but we love how fresh the eucalyptus scent leaves us.

Who It's For

This transparent deodorant stick is just the thing for those who want to avoid getting white streaks on their clothes or skin. But if you need a strong antiperspirant, this isn't the one for you.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Essential oils | Size: 2.6 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Great selection of scents

  • Glides on easily

  • Simple ingredient list

What We Don't Like
  • May leave streaks

If you're averse to baking soda formulas, magnesium and arrowroot powder are your armpits' new best friends. Magnesium stays on the surface of the skin to kill the bacteria that cause body odor (without disrupting the sensitive dermis just below). Meanwhile, arrowroot soaks up moisture like a sponge. This deodorant doesn't leave white streaks quite like baking soda, but you might notice subtle marks in your underarm area that should disappear if you rub it gently into your skin.

Who It's For

Men with sensitive skin who find baking soda a bit too harsh will appreciate this odor-preventing, ultra-absorbent formula.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Arrowroot powder, magnesium hydroxide | Size: 3 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Gentle, alcohol-free formula

  • Glides on easily

  • Doesn't leave a residue

What We Don't Like
  • Not very absorbent

  • May need to reapply throughout the day.

Baxter's citrus and herbal musk deodorant stick has a pretty loyal following in the grooming sphere—and for good reason. The alcohol-free formula is gentle on the skin, smells incredible, and doesn't stain your clothes. Made with antimicrobial tea tree oil and witch hazel, it banishes odor-causing bacteria While soothing inflammation. While we love how great it is for sensitive skin, the gentle formula may need to be reapplied throughout the day for maximum effectiveness.

Who It's For

It doesn't do much to keep your armpits dry, but you can count on this gentle formula to make you smell good without irritating your skin.

Type: Solid gel | Active Ingredients: Tea tree oil, witch hazel | Size: 2.7 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Eco-conscious paper packaging

  • Clean, vegan, and cruelty-free

  • Absorbent but not over-drying

What We Don't Like
  • Can leave a faint residue on clothes

  • Some say the scents are overpowering

Jada Pinkett Smith's brand is a welcome addition to the self-care space. We appreciate its mission to create clean, vegan formulas and commitment to using 99% plastic-free and recyclable paper packaging. What's more, all products are exceptionally affordable—and not just for today's standards.

This deodorant leans on arrowroot powder to soak up moisture, while shea butter and coconut oil nourish dry, irritated skin. That said, it's not designed to handle a ton of sweat. Some users have also noted it can be messy to apply, and some of the scent options are a tad overpowering.

Who It's For

If you're looking for an affordable deodorant from a brand committed to clean formulas and a sustainable supply chain, this one's for you.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Arrowroot powder, shea butter | Size: 2 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Leaves underarms feeling dry

  • Contains soothing ingredients

  • Fresh eucalyptus-mint scent

What We Don't Like
  • Mint may irritate some people's skin

Since your body needs a little time to adjust to an all-natural formula, it's smart to start with a product that showcases the category's full potential—that way, you'll stick with it for the long haul. Ursa Major's skin-friendly deodorant combines hops (yep, the same stuff used in beer) with absorbent kaolin clay and aloe vera to neutralize odors and deliver an ultra-dry yet soothing skin feel.

Our editor Ally Hirschlag loves how the eucalyptus scent leaves her feeling fresh all day while the stick applies easily and mess-free. Just a heads up, while the aloe does provide a calming effect, the peppermint might irritate some people's skin.

Who It's For

This moisture-zapping, skin-soothing, minty-fresh formula is great for guys skeptical about whether natural deodorant actually works to keep them smelling good and feeling dry.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Hops extract, aloe vera, kaolin | Size: 2.6 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Extremely absorbent ingredients

  • Smooth texture

  • Great lavender-coconut scent

What We Don't Like
  • Can be a little messy

If you sweat a lot, you might be wary about forgoing antiperspirants. That said, we wouldn't be surprised if this extra-strength formula from Milk + Honey makes you a convert. This deodorant combines baking soda with arrowroot powder for an extremely absorbent result. It also fends off odor-causing bacteria and neutralizes the area with tea tree oil while it calms with lavender and hydrates with coconut oil.

We love how effective this formula is at controlling sweat, but some users have noted it can be messy when applying.

Who It's For

This incredibly absorbent, odor-neutralizing deodorant offers impressive results, converting men who might resist giving up antiperspirant.

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Arrowroot powder, baking soda, coconut and lavender oils | Size: 2.5 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

L:A Bruket

What We Like
  • Easy to use

  • Kills odor-causing bacteria

  • Doesn't leave streaks

What We Don't Like
  • Contains alcohol

  • No absorbent ingredients

A spray option like this one is our go-to for those who balk at the potential for deodorant streaks on clothes. L:A Bruket Deo Spray contains alcohol, which could irritate sensitive skin, but the ingredient is very effective at killing bacteria that cause odors. Beyond that, it utilizes all kinds of essential oils and plant-derived moisturizers to nourish your skin, calm inflammation, and keep you smelling fresh. Plus, it's super easy to use and travel with.

Who It's For

If you're looking for a user-friendly, streak-free deodorant that keeps you smelling good (but not necessarily dry), Deo Spray has your name on it.

Type: Spray | Active Ingredients: Alcohol, plant oils, essential oils | Size: 1.9 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Eco-conscious packaging

  • Huge selection of scents

  • Simple ingredient list

What We Don't Like
  • Can leave residue on clothes

Each & Every deodorant comes in 11 scent profiles for those who might want to switch up their scent every once in a while. Citrus & Vetiver and Lavender & Lemon are a couple of our favs, and many men swear by the Sandalwood & Black Pepper scent. There's even an unscented option for guys who want to keep it simple.

We like that the deodorant sticks come in recyclable packaging and biodegradable containers. However, like other natural stick deodorants we've tried, this one can be a tad messy upon application

Who It's For

These natural deodorant sticks are ideal for eco-conscious guys who want to smell great.

Type: Balm | Active Ingredients: Magnesium carbonate, essential oils | Size: 2.5 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Kills off bacteria that causes odors

  • Absorbs underarm moisture

  • Lightweight and residue-free

What We Don't Like
  • May wear off after intense activity

By applying a probiotic-packed deodorant, you can fight the bad bacteria responsible for making your pits stink. But that's not all this product does. It's formulated with baking soda and tapioca starch to neutralize odors and keep your underarms powder-dry while nourishing your skin with coconut oil. The only thing we don't love is its power may wane as the day goes on (or with intense activity).

Who It's For

If you want a lightweight deodorant that soaks up sweat and fights odor-causing bacteria but won't leave a residue, Native is the way to go (unless you plan on being super active).

Type: Solid stick | Active Ingredients: Baking soda, tapioca starch, coconut oil, probiotics | Size: 2.7 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Won't stain clothes or leave white marks

  • Absorbs sweat and neutralizes odors

  • Calms inflammation

What We Don't Like
  • Doesn't last all day

Prefer a gel deodorant? We highly recommend Hawthorne. The aluminum-free formula sops up sweat with arrowroot powder, while witch hazel keeps odors and inflammation under control. And you can bet the clear gel won't leave white marks or stain your clothes. Just bear in mind you might need to reapply it a couple of times throughout the day.

Who It's For

Those in the market for a streak-free, non-staining gel deodorant that absorbs moisture and controls underarm smells won't be disappointed.

Type: Solid gel | Key Ingredients: Arrowroot powder, witch hazel | Size: 2.6 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Highly absorbent blend

  • Goes on clear

  • Attractive matte black container

What We Don't Like
  • Thick formula may clog pores

We love a charcoal-based deodorant since it detoxifies as it deodorizes. Primally Pure has an undeniably dapper appeal—but it's more than an attractive matte black container. This natural deodorant uses not only activated charcoal but also arrowroot powder and kaolin clay for a triple-threat approach to absorbing armpit sweat. We also like that it goes on completely clear and won't leave streaks on your clothes.

Who It's For

Want a deodorant that not only looks good on your bathroom counter but also does what it promises? Primally Pure is your guy.

Type: Solid stick | Key Ingredients: Activated coconut charcoal, arrowroot powder, kaolin clay | Size: 1.7–2.5 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What We Like
  • Invisible on clothes and skin

  • Absorbent and deodorizing

  • Excellent scent options

What We Don't Like
  • Doesn't last all day

If you like a solid deodorant stick but don't want to worry about it staining your clothes or leaving a clumpy white residue in your pits, Every Man Jack won't let you down. This product is formulated to absorb moisture, condition your skin, and keep odors at bay while sparing you from the telltale streaks. We're also big fans of the scents, which range from woody and coastal to herbal and musk. Users consistently love the smell, but say you may have to reapply throughout the day for maximum moisture absorption.

Who It's For

This solid stick tackles wetness and body odors. And you can have peace of mind knowing the invisible formula won't stain your clothes or leave white clumps in your pits.

Type: Solid stick | Key Ingredients: Witch hazel, cotton extract, lichen extract | Size: 3 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Where We Stand

Overall, our favorite natural deodorant for men is Schmidt's Signature Natural Deodorant because the absorbent, neutralizing formula actually addresses both the wetness and odor from sweat—plus, it contains nourishing and soothing ingredients. On a budget? Tom's of Maine Long-Lasting Natural Deodorant is a solid choice that won't break the bank.

What to Consider When Buying Natural Deodorant for Men

  • Thoughtful Ingredients: "There is no regulation of the word natural, so it can be misleading," says Dr. Roman. "Even if a product is 'natural,' it can still lead to irritation or rashes." With that in mind, you'll want to pay close attention to the ingredients when buying an aluminum-free deodorant. As with Schmidt's Signature Natural Deodorant, the best options contain a blend of gentle yet effective plant-derived ingredients, like coconut oil, shea butter, vitamin E, and aloe vera. (We also like Curie natural deodorant for this, too).
  • Absorbent and Antibacterial Properties: In addition to soothing, nourishing, and moisturizing ingredients, you'll probably want your deodorant that helps keep your underarms smelling fresh and dry. Like Milk + Honey Extra Strength Deodorant, natural deodorants often contain absorbent ingredients, such as baking soda, arrowroot powder, activated charcoal, and kaolin clay. And you can always supplement with armpit pads that absorb excess sweat. Many deodorants also lean on antimicrobial agents to kill the bacteria that cause odors—hops extract, magnesium, tea tree oil, and alcohol, to name a few.
  • Skin Sensitivity: Some people prefer natural deodorants because they use ingredients intended to maintain harmony in a sensitive area. Others want the strongest option available for moisture absorption, like Arm & Hammer Essentials. But as Dr. Roman notes, formulas that go heavy on baking soda can be overdrying, which might irritate sensitive skin. Fragrances can also irritate—yep, even the natural ones from essential oils—so proceed with caution if you have particularly reactive skin.
FAQ
  • What happens when you stop using deodorant with aluminum?

Be warned: The change from aluminum deodorant to natural has a grace period—and it isn't exactly graceful. When you make the switch, you may notice more of an odor for several weeks. Reapply your deodorant more frequently as your body adjusts.

  • How should you prepare your armpits for natural deodorant?

Besides waiting out the grace period, there are steps you can take to transition to a natural deodorant more comfortably. Try taking hot baths to encourage your body to sweat and release odors. Or try using a clay masque to prepare your armpits for a switch to natural deodorant.

"You could also use an antibacterial soap in the shower as you are transitioning products, and then slowly decrease the frequency of that soap if you feel it is no longer needed," says Dr. Roman.

  • Is it worth switching to a natural deodorant?

If you have health concerns around aluminum, it might be worth giving natural deodorant a try. While studies are not conclusive, some believe exposure to aluminum may have negative health effects, including a possible link to breast cancer.

  • Does natural deodorant clog men's pores?

Natural deodorants aren't considered antiperspirants and may not offer enough sweat absorption to prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Many people who previously used an antiperspirant will notice more sweat upon switching to natural deodorant. If you do notice breakouts in your underarm area, though, you could be reacting to a specific ingredient. Try switching brands to see if things clear up.
