about

Currently serving the Greater Boston area, HouseCuts is a platform that connects local quality hairstylists with clients who want haircuts at home. Looking to shake up the salon industry, HouseCuts allows stylists to earn more by working for themselves and servicing clients near their home location. Unlike other companies and traditional hair salons, HouseCuts set themselves apart by offering home haircuts and group cuts. For some people getting a haircut is a task, especially for those that are newborn parents or senior citizens. HouseCuts is looking to make this process even more convenient by providing people with a high quality hairstylist who is willing to come to their homes, rather than having to travel to the salon. Additionally, since salons are paying fixed rent and utility costs, they have no incentive to provide a discount for customers when they come in groups. Since HouseCuts are traveling to people's homes, their goal is to service everyone within that home so that the stylist can serve more and travel less. This is why HouseCuts provide a discount, so they can incentivize group booking, which ends up being a win-win. This pricing strategy has allowed HouseCuts to reach the level of growth they are at now, having booked 600 clients since the launch in June 2020.

founding story

As a recent Babson graduate student, Shais Raza spent time studying the "brick and mortar business model" and began searching for industries that could shift away from this model by leveraging technology instead. Amidst the pandemic, Shais saw many industries changing, and one that was hit especially hard was barbershops and salons. He began studying their margins and saw that many would go out of business or have to lay off stylists since they would not be able to operate at capacity, also resulting in a loss of clientele as well. This displacement provided an opportunity for people to experience something new. This is when Shais thought "what if we could allow people to get haircuts outdoors and from their own home, thereby making it safer and more convenient?" After this idea clicked, Shais began working on the concept and found his first stylist in June, completing 250 haircuts with her in 3 months. After showing proof of concept, Shais quickly added two more stylists and mapping out the Greater Boston area. To date, HouseCuts have completed 600 haircuts in the past 5 months.

Shais is now working to take his platform to the next level where people can enter their zip code and find a quality hairstylist based nearby, that is willing to come to their home. Ultimately HouseCut's goal is to make getting a haircut safer and more convenient. During the warmer summer months, HouseCuts were doing haircuts outdoors. Now, they are shifting to doing haircuts at home in indoor ventilated spaces (garages, seasonal porches, and in-home), requiring their stylists to conduct daily temperature checks and get tested bi-weekly for Covid-19, to ensure the highest level of safety and comfort for clients.

Bios

Shais Raza
Founder

Before graduating from Babson, Shais completed his B.S in Microbiology from Michigan State University. At an early age, he had a very curious mindset and always tried to understand the purpose of things and why they worked the way they did. During his undergrad, Shais found himself coming up with ideas all the time, but would suppress them as he thought ideas were just for dreamers, and being a doctor was the only true career path.

After graduating, Shais was torn whether to pursue medicine or venture off on his own and learn how to bring the ideas he had to life. This is when he decided to pursue Babson instead, as it was the best entrepreneurship school, and he felt that it would give him the knowledge he needed to start something of his own. From Babson, he learned how to analyze industries, create financial statements, and incorporate user feedback throughout the entire product development process.

Shais is now applying this knowledge in real-time as the current Founder of HouseCuts, taking on all the parts of managing, executing, marketing, and developing the tech for the company. He also enjoys public speaking and has had three years of teaching experience, giving him the confidence to communicate the bigger picture to others in a clear and concise way. Shais lives by efficiency and innovation, and is passionate about using technology to improve the lives of others. He truly believes the salon industry is ripe for disruption and is eager to see what he can change within the space.
