NEW YORK, NY (August 16, 2021) - KAHINDO announces today that founder and Chief Creative Director, Kahindo Mateene, has been chosen as one of 50 early-stage women entrepreneurs for the prestigious 2021 Tory Burch Foundation Fellows Program.
Given to a select group of diverse, small business owners, this year-long education program provides Fellows with a $5,000 business education grant and access to an inventory loan-fund, and a premiere online peer-to-peer network of other female founders along with targeted mentorship opportunities.
“I am thrilled to be chosen for the 2021 Tory Burch Foundation Fellows Program,” remarked founder Kahindo Mateene from her office in New York City. “Only 50 spots are awarded each year, and my classmates represent some of the most innovative companies and brands started by women in the last decade. Working alongside these visionaries who also share KAHINDO’s commitment to supporting and helping create opportunities for women will be a true honor.”
The Tory Burch Foundation Fellows Program aims to help address the stark reality that nearly half of all small businesses fail within the first five years, and—female founders are less likely to pass $1M in revenue, which is why the bulk of the 2021 Class represents entrepreneurs who have been in business for 5 years or less. From as young as 18 to 60, representing eighteen states and Washington, D.C - Fellows represent industries including retail, apparel, food/beverage, technology, and the construction industry, traditionally dominated by men. Purpose-driven companies, as well as those focusing on sustainability were also selected; and 58% of the founders are women of color.
Started in 2017, KAHINDO is luxury clothing that brings a spirit of wanderlust and excitement to the wardrobe of today’s bold, modern woman. Inspired by our namesake founder’s Congolese heritage, KAHINDO is a celebration of the legacy and natural beauty of Africa. Cut with timeless silhouettes that drape beautifully and are universally flattering, each piece is wearable luxury that lets today’s adventurous woman express her individuality while pairing effortlessly with her unique style.
“Tory Burch is an iconic brand and company, and Ms. Burch’s commitment to helping propel other women to success via education and mentorship is a real inspiration, and part of the DNA of my company. I look forward to my year with the Foundation and learning alongside not only my classmates, but also from a true business maven.”
