Tabu is a new kind of sexual wellness company - for bodies that change. With GYN and PT approved products and curated resources, we put health before pleasure to make sexual wellness feel as natural as our skin and exercise routines.

Founding Story

I had my first real birds and the bees talk with my mom last year, right before my 30th birthday. I learned some outrageous facts about how prevalent the sexual health side effects of menopause are from a friend. I almost didn’t believe it. Things like up to 90% of post-menopausal women experience painful sex due to vaginal dryness and atrophy, leading nearly 50% of women to give up on their sex lives altogether in their fifties.

For reasons I’ll never quite understand, I hung up the phone and immediately texted my mom. Without context, I wrote, “Hey, do you or your friends have pain or discomfort during sex?” To which she replied, “HAHAHAHA…” for at least a full 30 seconds.

But once we got over the absurdity of the question, we had a really sobering conversation. My mom knew exactly what was happening to her body. She admitted it was not just physical but deeply emotional, too. I was stunned. I quickly became obsessed. Truly. I talked to anyone and everyone who would give me the time of day, from my aunts, family friends, and future mother-in-law to OB-GYNs, therapists, and midwives. Most of my conversations with women ended in tears. Discussions around failed treatments for vaginal dryness and atrophy inevitably led to how they felt embarrassed, invisible. Like they were losing a part of themselves.

But there was one phrase and a rather simple idea that I heard over and over again that truly rocked my world: “Use it or lose it.” I listened as physician after physician, therapist after therapist recommended that peri-to post-menopausal women go out and buy a vibrator, lubricant, and commit to a sexual wellness routine. These “tools'' help strengthen your vaginal muscles, improve natural lubrication, and provide a host of physical and emotional benefits. While historically I may have been uncomfortable talking about sex, I, of course, knew that sexual health was a part of overall health. And I recognized that wouldn’t just magically disappear once we can no longer procreate. I didn’t, however, realize how therapeutic and healing it could be as our hormone levels change.

So, I started Tabu. We're on a mission to help people connect sex with their physical and emotional wellbeing, starting with women in peri-to post-menopause.

Dr. Heidi Gastler is a Herman and Wallace trained pelvic floor therapist and an advisor at Tabu Group, Inc. She founded Mountain to Sea Physical Therapy in 2016, a LA-based physical therapy practice specializing in orthopedic and pelvic health physical therapy. She believes that the body cannot be treated holistically without considering the pelvic floor (regardless of age or gender), and she is striving to normalize conversations and education regarding pelvic health issues including pain with sex, incontinence, and athletic performance and more.

Barb DePree, M.D., a gynecologist in practice for over 30 years, specializes in midlife women's health. Certified through the North American Menopause Society, she was named NAMS Certified Menopause Provider of the year in 2013. That same year, Sharecare named her a Top 10 Social Healthmaker for Menopause. Dr. Barb currently serves as the Director of Women’s Health Services at Holland Hospital, Holland, Michigan.

Finding that products helpful to her patients’ sexual health were not readily available, Dr. DePree founded MiddlesexMD. The website was created to share current, practice-tested, clinically sound information and products for women, including guidance for working with partners and caregivers.

Dr. DePree publishes regularly on both MiddlesexMD and AskDrBarbDePree, providing updates on research in women’s sexual health, as well as observations and advice based on her work with women in her practice. In 2020 her book Fearless Menopause: A Body-positive Guide to Navigating Midlife was published. She hosts a podcast called “The Fullness of Midlife,” for which she interviews women about topics related to health, happiness, meaning, and fulfillment. Dr. DePree’s articles have also appeared on NextAvenue, Huffington Post, RedHotMamas, and TheCovey; she’s also been published in OBG Management. She is a frequent spokesperson for women’s sexual health, quoted in Self, Everyday Health, and Huffington Post, among others, and has been interviewed for radio, television, and documentaries.
